Tower Inspection through thermal imaging

UAV-based tower inspection reduces the risks and efforts in comparison to the traditional approaches like manually going to the top of the tower through risky means, which is time-taking as well as infeasible to perform. Infrared / thermal imaging sensors collect high definition data from various angles to locate problematic regions. Through photogrammetric applications one can also produce outputs like orthomosaic and 3D models for further measurements and analysis.

After data acquisition, collected data and the produced output are further examined to identify the anomalies according to their priority order. Suggested means to overcome them include figuring out heat-generating areas and the level of heat generated, extra resistance parts, rusting of metals, electric joints failure, circuit break, signal blockage from the transmitter through any physical means, birds, crakes, etc.

Inspection and maintenance of towers periodically reduce the risk and effort of individuals and companies. The drone is very efficient especially if the area to be inspected is inaccessible or at very height and approaches towers without putting stress on the tower itself. Every system should be inspected at least once a year. Therefore any possible defective modules can be detected during installation and warranty services can be applied in time. This could include manufacturing defects or damaged caused during transport. It is also important to ensure the efficiency of the entire system while it is in operation.
